I've got some more to share on my project progress, but not too much. I have completed the drum programming. All of the programming was done in Logic for both tracks because I prefer the Logic MIDI editor and step sequencer. Currently, I do not like the kits available in Logic for the tracks I have chosen, but I have come up with an idea to solve this issue. I plan to replace the drums with real sounding drums using Trigger 2 in Protools.
This was one of my main goals for this period of time. Since I have not been able to finish recording yet, I did start planning more of my mixing process to be more efficient. Here are a couple highlights.
Something I have noticed from listening back to my first recording session in just surround is that a lot of room noise on that many tracks starts to muddy up the sound, to account for this, I am going to try to closer mic the rhythm guitar tracks for my second session to see if that fixes the problem.
The main idea for mixing in Atmos that I am working with is having enough guitar tracks to spread across the speakers. In essence, what I am trying to do is use Atmos as a more creative tool than just atmosphere. I think it can do more than that and that's what I want to find out.
I have also planned most of my panning. I want to get guitar into each speaker so it can sound huge. Leads will go on the ceiling for the most part. I'll also keep vocals to the front, but that may change with some experimentation.
The last thing that I want to mention for my current plan is some other instrumentation I want to add. Something that a lot of songs from this genre do is add a B3 organ playing power chords layered underneath the guitars. This gives some thickness to the sound that I think could really be helpful here.
